Joint Pain

Joint pain can range from a minor annoyance to a debilitating condition that limits a person’s ability to work and enjoy life. There are a myriad of reasons for joint pain, but most often, the pain is due to injury from trauma, disease or a degenerative condition of the joint.

Traumatic injuries of the joints include dislocation, broken bone, sprains and/or strains. Certain diseases or health conditions can cause joint pain such as bone cancer, fibromyalgia, gout, hemochromatosis, lupus, Lyme disease, Paget’s disease, pseudogout, rickets and sarcoidosis. Degenerative conditions include arthritis, bursitis, tendonitis, repetitive strain injury and osteoporosis.

Joint pain may present as a dull ache or throbbing pain. The pain may also be sharp and severe or diffuse. You may feel the pain upon movement or after extended periods immobility. The pain may radiate to other areas such as the neck or upper arm in the case of shoulder pain. Range of motion and strength of the joint may be compromised and thus, functionality of the joint may be limited.

Joints have many components including the endings of the bones that the joint “joins,” as well as the tissues that protect and connect the bone to surrounding tissue. Cartilage is meant to protect the bone endings from rubbing against each other. Ligaments connect bone to bone whereas tendons connect bone to muscle.

Together, the muscles, tendons and ligaments facilitate movement of the joint and the nerves of the joint signal this movement. The joint tissue is nourished by blood vessels and other tissues and components such as fascia and bursa perform protective functions.

Joint pain can be caused by injury and/or degeneration of any one of these components!

Proper evaluation will help pinpoint the cause of your joint pain. From there, a customized treatment plan can be developed to work towards correcting the cause of the joint pain, reducing pain and inflammation and increasing range of motion and functionality of the joint. Appropriate manual therapy, AIS stretching, strengthening exercises and nutritional supplementation can help prevent future injury and slow the degenerative process.

At the heart of any musculoskeletal problem, there is a process taking place that is the body’s normal response to any injury or degenerative condition. There are three phases to healing, during which time there are specific treatments necessary to promote faster more efficient healing to avoid chronic pain in the future.

The first phase is inflammation, which is the body’s way of attempting to protect an area that is injured. Inflammation, along with nerve entrapment can cause painful compression of the nerves and other components.

As well, proper fluid movement is hampered. This means that nourishing, healing fluids are restricted and toxic fluids from the injury remain in the tissue. Addressing this inflammation is crucial to the healing process. Passive motion should be used at this point to reduce the inflammation.

The second phase is the repair phase where your body attempts to replace the damaged tissue with new collagen. Nutritional supplements such as vitamin C are essential to this process.

The third phase is the remodeling phase in which the new collagen needs to be properly aligned. This new collagen is irregular and in order for it to function properly, it needs a little help being “modeled” with various techniques.
