Nerve Impingement & Entrapment

Nerve Impingement and Entrapment

Your nervous system includes the brain, spinal cord and an intricate web of nerves and neurons that are constantly firing messages throughout the body to accomplish a myriad of tasks such as movement, function and thinking.

With any intricate system, there are bound to be problems. Nerve irritation can lead to numbness and tingling as well as a minor to major loss of bodily function. There are two main reasons behind nerve irritation: nerve impingement (pinched nerve) and nerve entrapment (“trapped” or “stuck” nerve).

Under normal circumstances, nerve impulses are slow. When injury or trauma occurs, these impulses can speed up and the result is inhibited equilibrium causing pain and dysfunction. Postural distortion and stress can cause this as well.

Nerve impingement occurs when hard tissue such as bone or cartilage presses on the nerve. This can be caused by bulging discs in the spine, bone spurs and other instances where bone or cartilage is abnormal (shoulder problems, carpal tunnel syndrome etc.). The result is tingling, numbness, muscle weakness and pain that may radiate.

Nerve entrapment causes all the same problems as nerve impingement, but instead of hard tissue, the nerve becomes “stuck” to soft tissue such as muscle, ligaments, tendons and fascia (lining). Nerves are covered by slippery sheaths that are designed to allow smooth passage through these soft tissues. The nerve may become damaged, which leads to scar tissue and adhesions between the sheath and nerve.

Damage to nerves is most often caused by repetitive strain injury. Repeated movements can damage soft tissue due to the constant rubbing of the tissue as well as the chronic muscle contraction. The damage leads to inflammation and scar tissue build up. The damaged tissue becomes “sticky” and can lead to nerve entrapment. The same movement that caused the entrapment will exacerbate numbness and tingling symptoms.

Neuromuscular Therapy (NMT) is an effective treatment for nerve entrapment and impingement. NMT focuses on restoring health and function of the nervous and musculoskeletal systems as well as the anatomy, physiology and mechanics of the human body.

Static pressure is used to manipulate soft tissue and restore health to injured areas where nerve impingement and entrapment may be present. Inflammation is reduced and proper fluid flow is restored, aiding in the healing process and reducing further scar tissue build up.
