Shoulder, Arm & Hand Pain

Shoulder, Arm and Hand Pain

It’s nearly impossible to ignore pain in some of our most frequently used body parts such as the shoulders, arms or hands. Painful conditions affecting these areas can make everyday tasks difficult, excruciating or impossible!

Pain in the shoulders, arms or hands may be a dull ache or intense pain. The pain may be felt only upon reaching, lifting or grasping, or you may feel the pain after the affected portion has remained motionless for some time. The pain from some conditions may even wake you in the middle of the night.

Painful shoulder conditions may involve various components of your shoulder. The tendons or bursa of the rotator cuff (portion responsible for circular motion) may be inflamed causing pain. You may have arthritis in your shoulder. Traumatic injuries of the shoulder include a rotator cuff tear, dislocation, fracture and separation. Frozen shoulder is another shoulder condition that occurs when there is a severe stiffening of shoulder tissue that restricts motion in the shoulder.

Arm pain can be attributed to several conditions including tennis elbow (pain on the outside of the elbow), golfer’s elbow (pain on the inside of the elbow) and carpal tunnel syndrome. Hand pain may be directly related to arthritis, trigger finger, carpal tunnel syndrome and other repetitive strain injuries.

There are various treatment modalities that can help relieve your pain and increase range of motion and function. As well, there are many measures you can take to reduce future pain.

At the heart of any musculoskeletal injury in the upper extremities, there is a process taking place that is the body’s normal response to any injury or degenerative condition. There are three phases to healing, during which time there are specific treatments necessary to promote faster more efficient healing to avoid chronic pain in the future.

The first phase is inflammation, which is the body’s way of attempting to protect an area that is injured. Inflammation, along with nerve entrapment can cause painful compression of the nerves and other spinal components.

As well, proper fluid movement is hampered. This means that nourishing, healing fluids are restricted and toxic fluids from the injury remain in the tissue. Addressing this inflammation is crucial to the healing process. Passive motion should be used at this point to reduce the inflammation.

The second phase is the repair phase where your body attempts to replace the damaged tissue with new collagen. Nutritional supplements such as vitamin C are essential to this process.

The third phase is the remodeling phase in which the new collagen needs to be properly aligned.  This new collagen is irregular and in order for it to function properly, it needs a little help being remodeled with the "appropriate techniques and forms of therapy”.
