Tendonitis & Bursitis

Tendonitis & Bursitis

If you suffer from bursitis or tendonitis, you know how the pain can range from a minor annoyance to something that keeps you from enjoying your hobbies or activities. The pain is usually noticed upon movement, but it can also create a dull ache or throb that may even wake you in the middle of the night.

In both tendonitis and bursitis, there is inflammation around the muscles and bones. Common areas where bursitis or tendonitis occurs are the shoulder, elbow, wrist, hip, knee or ankle. The most common cause of bursitis or tendonitis is overuse of the muscles or joints in the affected areas.

Bursa are tiny sacs found between bone, muscles, tendons and skin. They are fluid-filled and meant to cushion and protect the tissue as it moves. Bursitis simply means that the bursa has become inflamed. Tendons keep bone and muscle attached and aid in movement. Tendonitis is similar in that the tendon is severely and painfully swollen making movement of the affected area difficult.

Bursitis is seen most often in the knee or elbow joint as a result of overuse of those joints or trauma. Tendonitis is usually a repetitive strain injury when the affected area has been overly used or misused over time. Developing tendonitis becomes a greater risk as we age because our tendons are less flexible. Certain health conditions can also raise the risk of developing bursitis or tendonitis such as acute infection, arthritis, gout, thyroid disease and diabetes.

Tendonitis and bursitis is sometimes defined for the affected joint. The following common ailments are all cases of tendonitis:

You should understand that at the root of all pain, there is a process taking place that is the body’s normal response to any injury or degenerative condition. There are three phases to healing, during which time there are specific treatments necessary to promote faster more efficient healing to avoid chronic pain in the future.

The first phase is inflammation, which is the body’s way of attempting to protect an area that is injured. Inflammation, along with nerve entrapment can cause painful compression of the nerves and other spinal components.

As well, proper fluid movement is hampered. This means that nourishing, healing fluids are restricted and toxic fluids from the injury remain in the tissue. Addressing this inflammation is crucial to the healing process. Passive motion should be used at this point to reduce the inflammation.

The second phase is the repair phase where your body attempts to replace the damaged tissue with new collagen. Nutritional supplements such as vitamin C are essential to this process.

The third phase is the remodeling phase in which the new collagen needs to be properly aligned.  This new collagen is irregular and in order for it to function properly, it needs a little help being remodeled with the "appropriate techniques and forms of therapy”.
