Tennis Elbow
Tennis Elbow
Tennis elbow, otherwise known as lateral epicondylitis, is a painful condition that results from an injury to the outer area of the elbow. The pain may increase and radiate from the outer area of the elbow down the forearm to the back of the hand. Common pain triggers are shaking hands or brushing ones teeth. The wrist area is stabilized during these motions and thus the pain is triggered. Your grip strength may be weakened.
Many tennis players suffer from this condition due to the constant use of their forearm, especially the motion necessary to perform a back swing; however, anyone who overuses or improperly uses the forearm muscles can develop tennis elbow. Constant twisting motions, such as using a screwdriver, can lead to this painful condition. Even constant typing or “mousing” can lead to tennis elbow.
When the elbow is used over and over, tendon fibers at the outer area of the elbow begin to tear. Muscles are attached to bones with tendons, so it is the constant use of the forearm muscles that causes the tears. This tearing leads to inflammation, which as you’ll soon find out, leads to a number of problems.
The painful symptoms of tennis elbow are usually all that’s required for diagnosis. Another sign is pain upon placing pressure at the outer area of the elbow where the tendons attach the forearm muscles or when you are asked to bend your wrists backwards as if you were revving a motorcycle engine.
To understand how our center can help alleviate your pain, let’s talk about the actual mechanics of any musculoskeletal injury, including tennis elbow.
You should understand that at the root of all pain, there is a process taking place that is the body’s normal response to any injury or degenerative condition. There are three phases to healing, during which time there are specific treatments necessary to promote faster more efficient healing to avoid chronic pain in the future.
The first phase is inflammation, which is the body’s way of attempting to protect an area that is injured. Inflammation, along with nerve entrapment can cause painful compression of the nerves and other spinal components.
As well, proper fluid movement is hampered. This means that nourishing, healing fluids are restricted and toxic fluids from the injury remain in the tissue. Addressing this inflammation is crucial to the healing process. Passive motion should be used at this point to reduce the inflammation.
The second phase is the repair phase where your body attempts to replace the damaged tissue with new collagen. Nutritional supplements such as vitamin C are essential to this process.
The third phase is the remodeling phase in which the new collagen needs to be properly aligned. This new collagen is irregular and in order for it to function properly, it needs a little help being remodeled with the "appropriate techniques and forms of therapy”.
