Herniated & Bulging Discs

Herniated and Bulging Discs

Herniated and bulging discs can be so painful that you cannot move. They can also produce a dull ache, tingling, burning and even a throbbing type feeling. The pain may be in your neck or low back and is usually felt on one side or the other.

The pain often begins slowly and builds. It may increase after lengthy standing in a stationary position or sitting, and the pain usually increases at night as well. Sneezing, coughing or laughing can bring on sharp pain and the inability to move. Some people do not even realize they have a herniated or bulging disc until this occurs or another movement shifts the disc, causing nerve entrapment and pain.

Lower back herniated or bulging discs may produce sharp pain on one side of the spine and radiate to your leg, hip or buttocks. Some patients report pain that extends all the way to the soles of their feet. You may also feel weakness or numbness.

Discs that become herniated in the neck region can produce pain upon movement. The pain may radiate to the upper arm, forearm or even the fingers. The pain might be felt deep in the shoulder blade region.

The discs are the cushiony, gel-filled structures between the vertebrae in the spine. Think of them as shock absorbers. As you walk and move through your day, you rely on these discs to protect the vertebrae and produce fluid movement for the spine.

Over time and through poor diet, sedentary lifestyle, injuries, misuse and the normal aging process, the discs can become worn. Fluid levels in the disc may decrease and cause the disc to “bulge” at the sides. On occasion, the discs may rupture, or “herniate” and move outside their normal space. Nerves become compressed and pain ensues.

As scary as this all sounds, there are treatments that can effectively relieve herniated discs and bulging discs and allow you to be pain free and on the road to a healthier spine. First, you need to understand the mechanisms behind the pain and healing process.

You should understand that at the root of all pain, there is a process taking place that is the body’s normal response to any injury or degenerative condition. There are three phases to healing, during which time there are specific treatments necessary to promote faster more efficient healing to avoid chronic pain in the future.

The first phase is inflammation, which is the body’s way of attempting to protect an area that is injured. Inflammation, along with nerve entrapment can cause painful compression of the nerves and other spinal components.

As well, proper fluid movement is hampered. This means that nourishing, healing fluids are restricted and toxic fluids from the injury remain in the tissue. Addressing this inflammation is crucial to the healing process. Passive motion should be used at this point to reduce the inflammation.

The second phase is the repair phase where your body attempts to replace the damaged tissue with new collagen. Nutritional supplements such as vitamin C are essential to this process.

The third phase is the remodeling phase in which the new collagen needs to be properly aligned.  This new collagen is irregular and in order for it to function properly, it needs a little help being remodeled with the "appropriate techniques and forms of therapy”.
