Neck Pain
There is a reason why we call situations that annoy us a “pain in the neck.” Neck pain truly is one of life’s annoyances mainly because we are reminded of it constantly in almost every movement we make. It hurts when we are still, when we reach for something or worst of all, when you forget just for a moment and turn your head!
Whether your neck pain is an acute situation such as a “crook” from sleeping in the wrong position, or chronic pain that is beginning to impact your life, you must address the root causes rather than bandage your pain with pain medicines. This only serves to treat the symptoms, and what you really need are effective solutions that will allow you to be pain free!
How does neck pain occur? The neck has a tremendous job of holding up our noggins and it also has a fairly large range of motion. It’s also a very complex area of the spine. Misuse or overuse of the neck, poor posture and poor sleeping conditions can cause neck pain through the strain of muscles, ligaments and tendons.
Degeneration of spinal components such as the discs and osteoarthritis can cause chronic neck pain. Whiplash occurs when the neck is forced beyond its normal range of motion either suddenly or overtime (i.e. holding a phone to your shoulder while you multi-task). Whiplash can lead to many future problems including headache, dizziness or shoulder pain.
At the root of all neck pain, there is a process taking place that is the body’s normal response to any injury or degenerative condition. There are three phases to healing, during which time there are specific treatments necessary to promote faster more efficient healing to avoid chronic pain in the future.
The first phase is inflammation, which is the body’s way of attempting to protect an area that is injured. Inflammation, along with nerve entrapment can cause painful compression of the nerves and other spinal components.
As well, proper fluid movement is hampered. This means that nourishing, healing fluids are restricted and toxic fluids from the injury remain in the tissue. Addressing this inflammation is crucial to the healing process. Passive motion should be used at this point to reduce the inflammation.
The second phase is the repair phase where your body attempts to replace the damaged tissue with new collagen. Nutritional supplements such as vitamin C are essential to this process.
The third phase is the remodeling phase in which the new collagen needs to be properly aligned. This new collagen is irregular and in order for it to function properly, it needs a little help being remodeled with the "appropriate techniques and forms of therapy”.
